Chapter 12

After Irma left, I cleaned up from breakfast while Jennifer got ready to meet a friend for lunch and shopping.

I stared at my cell phone, still not sure I should trust Deputy Molina, but finally decided I didn’t have a choice. I had to ask someone about the mayor.

“I hope I’m not disturbing you on a Saturday,” I said.

“What’s is it?”

“I remembered something else Kyla told me.”

“Is that so?” His voice sounded dubious, and I began to doubt if I was fooling him.

“Um, yeah.” I took a deep breath and dove in. “She said she had some dirt on the mayor that she planned to include in her novel, changing the names of course so she wouldn’t get sued.”

“When did she tell you this?” the deputy asked. “The night of the party?”

“I’m not sure.”

“Did she share with you the specifics of this dirt she claimed to have?” he asked.

“I think she planned to write that the mayor had embezzled funds and that contributed to the budget shortfall that forced the closing of the library,” I said, summarizing what Kyla had written.

“I see.” He tapped his pen on the desk. “That was before Mayor Gasden’s incumbency. Mayor Gould was running the city back then. Running it into the ground if you ask me.”

“Oh.” I thanked him for the information and hung up. What a disappointing conversation. All that I’d accomplished was tying my stomach into a knot. I hated lying, but if I told him I had the manuscript, he’d want to see it, and I had to protect my friend.

I didn’t want Irma going to jail for an impulsive act years earlier. If she’d pushed Norma down the stairs, I couldn’t believe she meant to kill her.

An idea popped into my head. I could delete the part of Kyla’s manuscript that implicated Irma and then hand it over to Molina.

Brilliant!

But before I did that, I’d better check and make sure there wasn’t anything incriminating any of my other friends. I chuckled to myself. What sort of secrets could Jennifer or Freddie be hiding?

Still, I’d better double check just to make sure.
